Appointment of National Task Force

Government has decided to constitute a National Task Force on Information Technology and Software Development to formulate the draft of a National Informatics Policy. The Task Force will be guided by an "IT Vision Group" consisting of eminent IT professionals, academics, civil servants (serving or retired), businessmen, political leaders and prominent IT professionals from abroad - both NRIs and foreigners.

Stamp Duty Exemption for IT Companies

The Government of Karnataka deems it in the public interest to remit the duties chargeable under the Karnataka Act 34 of 1957 Act, to the extent of fifteen percent, in respect of sale deed, lease cum sale deed of land (with or without building) to establish IT Park in any part of Karnataka.

Zero Import Duty on Computer Software

The Customs Notification No. 20/99 dated 28 February 1999 states that there shall be NIL customs duty on import of IT Software into India. Further, there is no applicability of Special Additional Customs duty (SAD) on IT Software. Also, since there is no duty on 'IT Software', there is no applicability of surcharge.

Draft Rules for Implementation of the Information Technology Act

Information Technology Act, 2000 was passed by both the Houses of Parliament on 17th May, 2000 and assented to by the Hon'ble President of India on 9th June 2000 with a view to facilitate e-commerce and give recognition to the communication and contract carried out through electronic means. Section 89 of the Information Technology Act, 2000 empowers the Controller to make regulations consistent with the Act to carry out the purposes of the IT Act. These draft rules are yet to be approved by the Ministry of Law, Justice & Company Affairs from the legal point of view and these should be taken as initial draft only.
